Expanding your current home to grow with your needs is often more cost-effective than moving home, says AtelierHB

AtelierHB designs extensions that offer bigger and better spaces for sleeping, cooking, washing, working, gaming, growing, socialising, sunning, playing music and more. Each space has to work well with the style of the original building and its setting, as well as provide flexibility for the future. Greater energy efficiency, a better relationship between indoors and outdoors, improved light and movement through a space, privacy, access and sensitivity to neighbours are all considerations.

Ian will talk with you about your ideas, aspirations and constraints, as well as what you will need to meet planning and building regulations. Expanding your current home to grow with your needs is often more cost-effective than moving home. Built-in energy efficiencies can create long-term resilience, comfort and value. The most important thing is how an extension adds value to the way you live.

Local knowledge of working in South Devon, Dartmoor, the South Hams, Cornwall and Somerset, and the experience of working with local planners, often in Areas of Natural Beauty, Conservation Areas and sites of special interest, helps you address likely issues early in the project. Ian’s flair for design and creative problem-solving, paired with the highest level of 3D BIM technology avoids costly changes late in the process.

Among AtelierHB’s projects are: a two-story extension in a residential development that offered everyone in a growing family their own room: the parents now have an en-suite master bedroom, and the children their own place do homework or play in, plus a separate laundry area.

Another commission was for a flexible den and media room with a living sedum roof, opening out onto the patio and garden, leaving the formerly chaotic living room a space of calm. One homeowner wanted a glass house to be their sunny sanctuary, with hill views allowing a connection to the outdoors in all seasons. Other projects include an acoustic music room, and a friendly, fabulous kitchen.
