This project was shortlisted for the 2014 South West LABC Award of Excellence for Best Change of Use of an Existing Building or Conversion.
Parke Barn in Broadhempston, Devon, was a disused agricultural building transformed into a holiday let.
The Building Excellence Awards celebrate the essence of good buildings. To be selected as a finalist, requires technical excellence, innovation, green and sustainable building quality, and good team working with the local authority building control teams. The judges also looked for high performance and problem solving where creative solutions were used to solve difficult issues. In changing the use of the building, improvement in the original use and aesthetics were essential.
As a holiday let, Parke Barn was able to sleep up to six people in two bedrooms and a mezzanine overlooking the main living area. Much of the character of the original barn was retained with innovative solutions inside to make best use of the space practically and aesthetically. One reviewer from France wrote: ‘We stayed in Parke Barn for six weeks. It was just perfect…”
Update - After several years as a holiday let, Parke Barn was sold to new owners, who have commissioned AtelierHB to further convert it into a full-time family home.
